Sanding

It is a process that renders the raw, natural aspect to a wooden floor through the use of abrasive sandpaper to effectively scratch its surface clean. Consisting of several stages, sanding usually starts with the use of rough grit sandpaper and then follows through to smooth grit sandpaper so that the floor surface be cleaned from any previous sealant, indentations, scratches and stains.

For uneven floors, a belt sander is used in order to obtain a flat surface, while level or special types of floors (such as antique floors) are sanded with polishing/cleaning sanders.

Staining

It is a process which involves the application of transparent lacquer coatings in order to change the shade of the basic wood to darker or lighter tones.

There are two main types of stains used for this process, namely:

- Water-based stains – achieving results closer to paints, they are more difficult to work with because they do not fully saturate the wood (which means that wood may take more colour if the stain layers overlap)

- Oil-based stains – transparent and considerably superior to the water-based ones, they do not overlap, which contributes to attaining a great-looking finish.

However, the successful outcome of the staining process does not solely rely on the type of stains used, but also on the type of wood and on how the floor is prepared for this stage. Some woods stain better than others, such as oak in comparison to pine or maple. The manner in which the floor is sanded also matters. Should the floor be sanded too coarsely, there is the possibility of some sanding marks to remain visible. On the other hand, if the floor is sanded too smoothly, the wood may not take the colour due to the grain being closed.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS FOR A LONG-LASTING BEAUTIFUL ASPECT OF YOUR FLOOR

- When vacuuming the floor, use brushes on the vacuuming head. Thus, you prevent the hard metal or plastic parts of the vacuuming head to scuff or scratch the floor surface.

- Mop the floor with a damp mop, not a soaking wet one as excessive amounts of water wear the surface sheen.

- For chairs, stools, desks, tables, use self-adhesive pads attached to the point of contact with the floor to reduce wear.

- If possible, don’t enter the room in question wearing shoes. Gravel, water, mud and other particles brought from outside contribute to the deterioration of the floor.

- Do not use steam cleaners as they ruin the floor sealant, thus compromising its hardness.
